Black morocco with gilt decorated borders to both boards and gilt title and decorated compartments to spine. An attractive binding. James Montgomery (1771-1854), born at Irvine in Ayrshire was a poet, hymnwriter and editor primarily associated with humanitarian causes such as the campaigns to abolish slavery and to end the exploitation of child chimney sweeps. He achieved some fame with his poem ;The Wanderer of Switzerland', which addressed the French annexation of Switzerland.
